This image features two illustrations to explain the anatomy and physiology of the achilles tendon of the ankle. The first illustration shows the achilles tendon, soleus muscle and gastrocnemius muscle, lower leg and foot bones from a lateral view. The second image is and enlargement of the same ankle and foot anatomy in an extended position; it demonstrates the action of the achilles tendon during extension (when the foot is extended).
