This medical illustration depicts fetal distress in utero caused by a condition called nuchal cord, where the baby's umbilical cord wraps tightly about the neck while the baby is developing in the womb. The baby's upper body is shown discolored to indicate the compressed arteries and lack of oxygen from the condition.
